Southwest Newfoundland

A secret!

A Well-Kept Secret

That is yours to explore.

Ssh! Newfoundland’s southwest region doesn’t get all the plaudits, but it is a mecca for birdlife and boasts scenery quite unlike anywhere else on the island. We have developed a short tour that captures the excitement of the area. Available as a three-day addition to any of our other tours, this excursion will also put you in contact with the vestiges of French culture that exist in the accents and culture of a small number of French descendants.

Location

Discover the island's south coast.

Start with a visit to the serenity of Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn and the sight of rolling mountains and soaring birds.

The south coast road is a thread connecting outport jewels and I challenge you to resist taking photos! Rose Blanche is the remote outport best know for the remarkable lighthouse designed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s family. This mass of granite is unlike any other lighthouse in North America and the setting looks like it was designed for a movie in Scotland.

Driving a loop of the Port au Port Peninsula is a study in landscapes, with a glimpse at the French culture that once thrived here, while a visit to Stephenville is a chance to understand Newfoundland’s role in WW 2.

Why South?

An under appreciated gem.

To understand southwestern Newfoundland from a tourist’s perspective, you have to realize that most folks arrive in the region by ferry, are let off on the dock where they immediately join the traffic racing north, missing the amazing sites in this corner of our island. The clever (or lucky) ones stop. Take a breath. And start their vacation. Their reward is accumulating some of the best memories they will have of their vacation.
